Custom air conditioning duct designs for improved efficiency, energy saving and comfort

A poor duct design can create problems with your air conditioning. A well-designed initial ductwork for your building, home, office or warehouse will help in optimizing the cost of your HVAC investment as long as the building is standing.

Airconditioning duct design software have made ductwork more efficient across the board. These advance engineering solutions can be used to determine the most efficient course for the ductwork, minimizing the amount of time air has to spend inside the duct, so the network doesn’t have to work as hard to get the air to the designed location.

A custom ductwork and duct design play an important role in lowering your utility bills and improving comfort. Air should be conveyed as directly as possible to save space, power and material. Sudden changes in direction should be avoided, and if it’s not possible, then turning vanes should be used to minimize the pressure loss. The air flow in supply and return ducts should be balanced to produce a neutral air pressure environment in each room, while the system should be able to provide the correct volume of conditioned air for meeting the heating and cooling requirements of different rooms.

Diverging sections should be gradual while aspect ratio should not exceed 4.0. Ideally, it should be close to 1.0, while the duct material should be as smooth as possible to reduce frictional losses.

Some of the key benefits of a custom ductwork design include:

Increased energy savings

Better indoor air quality

Improved comfort

Prolonged lifespan of HVAC equipment

Improved health of building occupants

We will discuss briefly here some of the popular air conditioning duct design software and HVAC computer programs developed by ACADS-BSG, the trusted building services software developer. Some of these programs have specifically been designed for use in Australia, New Zealand, and other regions in Northern and Southern Hemisphere. The programs allow for easy input and modification of data as per the region’s peculiar climatic conditions, and materials used in buildings. Here we go.

DONKEY

DONKEY air conditioning ductwork design computer program can be used to determine the size of a duct network. It carries out a complete acoustical analysis and quantities for costing. It operates via a set of add-on menus in AutoCAD.

The program allows for automatic connection of run out ducts to terminals and automatic insertion of fittings. Various alternative designs can be quickly investigated to satisfy the design objective. Overall results including the duct sizes, pressure drops terminal NR levels and damper out-of-balance pressure are displayed on screen on the actual duct layout. Fittings (bends, divided flow, dampers, etc.) can be selected from the Slide Boxes, and DONKEY will automatically calculate pressure loss, self-generated noise level and attenuation for these fittings.

The ductwork system can be sized with any of the three methods – static regain, consistent pressure gradient, balanced pressure drop. The program accounts for interaction between fittings in close proximity, while the sound power levels throughout the entire network can be calculated at seven octave band frequencies from 63 to 4000 Hz, taking into account the noise generated by the fan, ducts, VAV boxes, etc.

DOLPHIN

The computer program DOLPHIN can be used for calculating the pressure loss of a series of ducts and fittings for the required fan pressure for a duct network. One can enter the ducts into the program, starting from the fan and working down towards a selected terminal. DOLPHIN will calculate the pressure loss on each length of the duct and fitting, and determine the required fan pressure for a duct network.

DOLPHIN can perform an hourly cooling load analysis, taking account of thermal storage on a design day in each month of the year. The program carries out a psychometric analysis of each AHU, expressing the coil performance as a bypass factor. Additional data for light weight roofs can be entered to analyse the buildings with light weight metal deck.

CAMEL

CAMEL is an air conditioning load estimation program that can be used for calculating the design heating and cooling load and associated psychometrics for an air conditioning plant. Fresh air quantities can be entered at room or zone level as I/s/person. The plant fresh air quantity is then determined with the help of Compartment Formula from ASIGGB-1991 for multiple rooms and zones.

Some specific programs feature support for Demand Controlled Ventilation (DCV) and Energy Recovery Ventilation (ERV) to adjust airflow according to occupancy, and achieve savings on cooling and heating.
